Vancouver International Airport (YVR), Canada’s second busiest traveling hub, hosted more than 19 million passengers in 2015. This high traffic destination needed a major renovation after many years of heavy use. The plans for this remodel were extensive and required multiple installers from different trades working cohesively to meet tight timelines.
INSTALL Warranty Contractor Maxwell Floors was awarded work at Vancouver airport and started in January 2008 with the YVR Pier C Project. The level of workmanship that Maxwell Floors brought to the table proved the quality of installation they were capable of and set the standard for the rest of the airport. This project received an award from PCL Construction and was the leading factor in Maxwell Floors being specified in five subsequent projects within the YVR remodel.
The first obstacle the installers had to overcome was acquiring security clearances to enter the facility. Background checks to obtain airport level of security clearances can take anywhere from three to six months.
The next challenge was the level of detail needed to manage and orchestrate the many phases of different colors and patterns. At certain times, Project Manager Ozzy Rodrigues was managing four different projects within the airport at once. Running this operation smoothly was no simply task. All products had to be ordered in roll sequence and by phase. To manage all of the projects, Rodrigues maintained a master list that ordered each project by roll sequence, phase, product, color, quantity and timing for when they were needed on site. Projects completed by Maxwell Floors at the Vancouver Airport were as follows:
YVR Pier C Project / with PCL Construction ( 161,458 sq ft. ) Jan 2008 – July 2009.
YVR A – B Connector Project / with Ledcor Construction ( 296,000 sq ft ) July 2013 – Jan 2015
Each of the projects Maxwell Floors collaborated on turned out great and were completed on time.
“INSTALL certifications allow Maxwell Floors to bid on massive project like this one,” notes Rodrigues. “We’re a qualified shop full of installers who have the best certification in the industry. It was a snowball effect after we completed the YVR Pier C Project because it showed them that the quality of workmanship is more valuable than the price tag.”
