Designed by internationally recognized architect Peter Eisenman, the Greater Columbus Convention Center, with its unique spaces, sharp angles, wide spotlights and spacious walkways is a bold landmark luring millions of visitors each year. This striking, modern facility has more than 1.7 million square feet of space for events of all sizes.
Background
In 2011, the convention center experienced a total floor failure – 90,000 square feet – due to a faulty installation by an unskilled, uncertified labor team. A complete replacement was required. Beginning in 2014, the convention center board of directors began planning for a major renovation of the existing space and an expansion of an additional 100,000 square feet. Considering the costly experience of the first installation, the board of directors needed to ensure they were getting a quality installation that will last.
The Opportunity
The board of directors reached out to the Indiana/Kentucky/Ohio Regional Council of Carpenters (IKORCC) for assistance in finding qualified contractors to bid this project. INSTALL has since been advocating heavily on behalf of local INSTALL Warrantied Contractors to ensure that a local IWC is awarded this project.
The Results
- The IKORCC provided the Board of Directors with four INSTALL Warranty Contractors who were prequalified by the construction manager (CM).
- INSTALL’s executive director and regional agent presented to the architectural firm, board of directors, the interior architectural firm, the mayor’s staff and other interested parties to make the case for the extreme level of training and professionalism of INSTALL Warranty Contractors.
- Following this presentation, the board of directors and architects recommended to the construction manager to implement the INSTALL Warranty Contractor only standards into the bid document.
- The pre-qualified contractors are already doing other projects for this particular Construction Manager. INSTALL has helped these contractors win many more man hours aside from the convention center project.
